Horse Show Checklist: 1Day Show vs. Weekend or Week Long Show
Horse show season is starting again….make sure you don’t forget anything that you need to take to the horse show with you!! Below is a general checklist to help you pack you trailer and hopefully not forget anything!
Paperwork:
- Directions to Showgrounds
- Show information (classlist, rules)
- Rulebook for the association you are showing with
- Membership Cards (if needed for the show)Horse Registration (if needed for the show)
- Coggins Test, Health Certificate (if crossing state lines), or any other veterinary notes
- Emergency Phone Numbers
- Test Booklet (Dressage riders or Eventers); NRHA patterns (Reiners)
- Checkbook/Wallet/I.D.
- Veterinarian Phone Number
For Travel:
- Truck and Trailer Registration
- Shipping boots or wraps
- Stable Sheet (if needed)
- Head Bumper (if needed)
- Leather or Breakaway Halter
- Lead Ropes
- Trailer Ties
- Jack for Trailer
- Spare TireJack
- Manure Fork/Manure bucket
- Emergency Phone Numbers in case of Breakdown
- Buckets
For You
- Sun block
- Sunglasses

For Your Horse

- Leg wear (for warm-up, as well as show-ring—as dictated by your discipline)
- Approved martingales or other auxiliary tack
- Spare stirrups and leathers
- Breast plate, as needed
- Whip/cropLounge line and lounge whip (if needed)
- Stud chain (if needed)
- Halter and lead rope, plus a spare
- Horse blankets/Sleazy and cooler (if needed)
- Drinking water and bucket (if water is not available)
- Hay/Hay Net, other feed
- Equine First Aid Kit
- Treats
- Stall Guard and Screw Eyes (if boarding overnight)
For Grooming
- Fly Spray
- Buckets
- Shampoo/Conditioner/Detangler
- Sweat Scarper
- Brushes, curries
- Hoof pick
- Coat polish
- Spot remover and/or whitening products
- Sponges and rags
- Hoof dressing/polish
- Grooming tote
- Leather cleaner
- Cordless clippers or horse shavers (for missed hairs)
- Water in a spray bottle
- Braiding kit/banding supplies
- Scissors
- Ribbons for mane (saddleseat)
- Rain gear (always carry just in case!)
- Step stool (if needed for braiding/banding or mounting)
Show Apparel:
- Breeches/jodhpurs
- Jeans or show pants
- Chaps (if needed)
- BootsBoot pulls and jack
- Boot socks
- Boot polish
- Spurs
- Shin and knee guards (games/gymkhana); other protective gear
- Coat, jacket or vest
- Show shirts

Everything on this list is needed for 1 day shows. Additional items needed for weekend or week long shows may include:
- Saddle racks
- Bridle racks
- Extra hooks to hang in tack room
- Broom
- Tables
- Chairs
- Clothing rack/shelf
- Feed and hay for your horse (don’t forget buckets)
- Medications/supplements your horse may need
- Book a hotel room or camper spot for over night
- Bedding if not available at showgrounds
- Mats/carpet for tack room floor
- Suitcase with your clothes
