Winter Tack Safety Checks
Take advantage of the shorter/colder days of winter to check your tack for safety and condition.
1) STITCHING
Check stitching, as it deteriorates more quickly than leather.
Especially on reins, girths and stirrup leathers. When cleaning
and oiling, use oil sparingly.
2) BITS
Look for signs of rough edges or wear and replace as necessary.
For a quick clean up, soak in hot soapy water then put on the
top rack of your dishwasher.
3) SADDLE
Check for signs of wear on the billet straps. If wool flocked,
check for lumpy, uneven places on the underside as it may need
to be reflocked. Now may also be a good time to have the saddle
fitter out to recheck your saddle. Horses change shape through
the year, sometimes losing weight in winter.
4) ALL LEATHER
Leather condition needs to be checked on a regular basis. It will
become dry unless it is kept pliable with oil or saddle soap to
replace its natural oil.
HAPPY CLEANING!!!
