Winter Water Buckets
Very few of us have the luxury of heated water troughs or buckets. Because of this, many horses are not able to drink as much water as they need in the course of each day, which could lead to complications. A horse should consume approximately 6 - 12 gallons of water per day. Keeping buckets and troughs clear of ice is a necessity. Just breaking through the surface isn't enough. You should clear as much of the ice out as possible to encourage your horse to drink. This shold be done as often as you can, but at least twice a day.
If you do have the luxury of a heater, be sure your horse cannot chew the cord or step on it!!!!! Some heaters require a certain level of water in order to operate safely, so be sure to read all the directions thoroughly before use.
Here's to a short and warm winter!!!!!
