Horse Laundry
Things your mother never told you about.......Horse Laundry!!!
All horse owners have to face this chore at one time or another. Here are a few helpful hints to make it a little easier for you if you decide to do the washing yourself.
1. Hair...it can be a problem year round but it is especially annoying in late winter and early spring when the horses shed. If you want to keep hair out of your washer and its filter you can vacuum it off the blanket.......or put it in the dryer for 10 minutes......or brush it off (outdoors) by hand.
2.Smell.....even if you send your blankets to us, sometimes an older blanket retains strong odors. You can eliminate these by pre-treating the smelly spots with a pet odor eliminator. Spray the offending spot and LEAVE IT. You may need to saturate the spot if the smell & stain go all the way through. Smaller items can be soaked in the same products for up to 4 hours before laundering. Skip fabric softener in the rinse...use 1/2 cup vinegar instead and use a dryer sheet.
3.Stains....Manure and urine. Ugh!!! Leg wraps are especially vunerable. Simply soak these things for at least one hour before washing. You can soak in the washer and then continue the wash cycle, or make up a "diaper Pail" and let it soak longer. Only use bleach on the things you want white!!! Use an Oxy-clean additive for anything else: especially non-cotton fabric.
4.Polo wraps/standing bandages...these have a nasty habit of getting horribly knotted up. A simple solution is to (1) close the velcro then (2) fold in quarters (lenghtwise) and secure with a big safety pin. Wash and dry as usual. The few minutes you spend before hand will save a lot of time later.
OR you can just bring them here!!!!!!
