Horse Tips and Hints

The more time you spend around barns and horses the more you learn. One thing you learn is how to improvise. The pharmaceutical companies refer to the practice as "off label" - using a product for another purpose. Horse people rather think of it as being sensible!!!

Hope the following list is handy for you!!!

1)Ivory Liquid:Keep a small bucket of Ivory mixed with water while you ride. Dip the bit right in after you un-tack, then wipe it dry to minimize buildup. The same water can be used to quickly sponge off your tack before you put it away. Ivory is a strong cleaner and can be used to clean small wounds (rinse very well!!!) or to wash white legs (again rinse well!!!).

2)Paper Towels:Can be used in place of gauze to temporarily dress a small wound if folded several times. Also to stuff your wet gloves and boots to expediate the drying process.

3)Hoof Pick:If it has a flat tip, it can double as a screwdriver. If it has a pointed tip you can use it too get your reins off your bit for cleaning or to change the bit. Don't be too rough or you can break the stud hook! You can also use it for cleaning out horse's hooves!

4)Double End Snaps: A thousand and 1 uses!!!

5)Baling String:A thousand and 2 uses, especially if used in conjustion with a double end snap! Emergengy twitch....Emergengy Tail cord.....Temporary lead rope.

6)Pliers: Great when used with a good sturdy hoof pick to get off that loose shoe with the clip that is threatening to stick into your horses foot and cause an absess. Great...more work!!

7)Plastic Bags:Useful as a glove for applying dressings to wounds. Also great for making a leg sweat wrap or a hoof poultice.

8)Diapers (not the very small size):Used to bandage the foot after you got the loose shoe off and realized you have no Easy Boot. Use in conjuction with duct tape.

Well, hope some of these tips are helpful. Email me with your suggestions!!!
